Kohat

​Kohat is a beautiful metropolis in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the capital of Kohat District. The city is also known for being the center of some ancient Pashtuns tribes like Bangash. The said people have been living in the district for several centuries. Residents in Kohat speak Pashto and Hindko with the Kohati dialect.

History

According to most beliefs, the Buddhist Raja Kohat was the founder of the town. The fourth-largest city of the KPK Province was once the site of frequent battles between local tribes and British immigrant forces in the late 19th century.

Today’s Kohat is a semi-developed, comprising almost all the living facilities. It has several markets and bazaars, a military cantonment, and an old fort built in the British Raj. It also has a government college that provides quality education with the affiliation of the University of Peshawar.

Productions

The city manufactures cotton loincloths, textiles, leather goods, shoes, and turbans. It also has many agricultural productions, with the primary crop of guavas. Kohat is home to a range of towns with numerous societies. It comprises three clans, including, Khattak, Bangash, and Afridi.

 Geography

The town of Kohat is at 1,604ft altitude. It has a total area of 2,545 square kilometers. The town of Kohat lies in the north of the Kohat Toi River at some distance from the original city built in the 14th century.

Climate

Kohat lives with a hot semi-arid climate of a desert. Summers are usually hot with an average temperature between 35C to 38C. It remains cold during winter from November to March with temperatures from 3 to 11C.

Getting In

The city of Kohat connects with the rest of the country by road and by rail. With a train, you can reach the city with Thal or the primary rail line of Peshawar-Karachi via Jand. If you are coming by road, Bannu, Peshawar, and Rawalpindi are some cities to cross. The route also includes a 1.2-mile tunnel that connects Peshawar with Kohat.

Kohat has some tourist attractions. Tanda Wildlife Park near Kohat city spread an area of 2800 acres. The largest wildlife park in the province consists of the Tanda reservoir and the catchments in the town. It is rich in numerous landscapes, sceneries, and an assortment of birds and mammals.

Another wildlife park in Kohat district is Kotal Pheasantry that comprises a total area of one Kanal. It has exotic flora and fauna and species like golden pheasant, reeves pheasant, silver pheasant, peacocks, and lots more.

The Kohat Fort has a historical aspect. Although most of the fortress is discolored now, it remains a landmark to enjoy photography for tourists. Then, there is 1.9 kilometers long Pak-Japan Tunnel or Kohat tunnel that associates the district with Darra Adam Khel.

The city also has Tanda Dam on Tanda Lake in its neighborhood towards the Hangu Region. It serves as the primary source of a water system to adjoining regions. Tanda Dam has a stunning environment, which attracts countless tourists and visitors.
